It's Shure's first successful commercial stereo cartridge. The cartridge body is the same as the M7. Three different needles were offered for the body: N3, N7, and N21. These are .7 mil (180um) radius but have different compliance, and therefore different tracking forces.
Some people really like these cartridges, I think, especially for old LPs and 45s. Replacing the stylus isn't as easy as it is with later Shures. Needles were made by aftermarket stylus companies and Shure made replacement styli for these bodies into the 1980s, maybe even later.
I find the Stanton 500/Pickering V15 more practical to live with and vastly more versatile, but that's my personal opinion. This Stanton model is also three stereo generations later than your Shure M3. _________________ Richard Steinfeld Author of The Handbook for Stanton and Pickering Cartridges and Styli
